in Your Classroom

Real Talk is a FREE remote exchange program that provides young students from the US, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein with opportunities to practice one another’s languages, build relationships, and engage in meaningful, intercultural exchange.

Why Real Talk?

First of all, it’s free. So, it doesn’t get better than that.

Second, we give German-speaking students the opportunity to actively practice spoken English with native English speakers.

Third, it’s a chance for American students to learn more about Europe and the German language, which opens up a world of opportunities for them.

And most importantly, it enables students to broaden their horizons and gain intercultural competence.

Guten Tag, Y’all!

Peer to Peer

Through cultural immersion and diffusion, Real Talk enables young people separated by the vast ocean to meet each other, teach each other, exchange their views with each other, and better understand each other.

Bringing Abroad Home

This cultural and linguistic exchange bridges the gap between young people and enriches their minds beyond something their parents and grandparents were able to experience.

The program serves as a bridge across the ocean, especially to those who cannot afford to travel by plane and don’t have the opportunity to socialize with a person from another continent.

Now, thanks to Real Talk, they do.

Paving the Way Today

Many colleges have foreign language admission requirements, so understanding German and English can increase the chances of being accepted.

Besides, mastery of one or more foreign languages gives students a competitive edge in career choices and prepares them for success in the global economy.

Beyond a Textbook

Sure, students can learn a new language from a textbook or an app, but participating in an international exchange program lets young people learn natural and authentic language firsthand.

Real Talk gives students a real opportunity to learn and actively practice both formal and informal language, which helps them converse proficiently in real-world situations in real time with real native speakers.

Diverse & Inclusive

Historically, many students have been excluded from reaping the benefits of educational exchange programs due to socio-economic barriers. Many programs divide classes of students because they are private, exclusive, and elusive.

But not us! We want everyone to join in the conversation so they can benefit from engaging cultural exchanges, while building their capacity to deal effectively with diversity and difference.

Liebling Sibling

English is a Germanic language.

One study says that about 130,000 words in modern English derive from Germanic languages. In fact, about 60% of most commonly used words in English have German roots.

Thanks to the unique relationship between these two languages, speaking one of them makes it much easier to learn the other one.

Practice Makes Perfect

Numerous studies show that students fail to fully grasp foreign languages when they don’t have anyone to practice them with.

And what can be better than the opportunity to improve fluency by engaging in full-on, dynamic conversations with native speakers of the foreign language students aim to learn?

Prepped to Lead

As our world has become more interconnected and interdependent, so has the need to speak a foreign language and to develop core intercultural competence.

Real Talk has been developed to help students become global citizens who are both culturally and linguistically prepared to function in this Brave New World.

How to Be in Sync?

We encourage all the teachers who participate in our remote exchange program to work together during the lesson planning process to ensure that each lesson meets targeted goals and that the student materials align with the academic standards required in their independent countries.

Is Real Talk Only

For Language Classes?

Absolutely not. Real Talk is a cross-curricular program that can be used in any class: language, math, social studies, English Language Arts (ELA), and others.

“How?” you might ask. It’s simple: Students can practice and learn each other’s languages while also mastering the academic content laid out in their grade level curriculums.

ELA: If your class is studying Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, your class can be partnered with an exchange class that is studying Romeo and Juliet too. Or, if your class is studying the etymology of words, German and American students can work together to understand where the studied words were derived and how they changed over time.

MATH: If your class is studying the Pythagorean theorem, German and American students can work together to find the relation between the sides of a right-angled triangle. Then they can use mathematical equations to measure the angles of the Washington Monument and the Brandenburg Gate.

SOCIAL STUDIES: If your class is studying the Holocaust, German and American students can work together to discuss certain events that led to this human tragedy.

SCIENCE: If your class is studying Kepler's laws of planetary motion, students can work together to talk about Johannes Kepler.

Case examples

First, you fill out the form below to reserve a spot so you can partner with other schools across the ocean. We carefully review the submitted information.

Then we match your school or class with a partner school or class from the US or Europe based on grade level, students’ academic interests, and their language proficiency.

Once matched, we send you your partner school’s contact information and further instructions, along with an invitation for your school or class to join Real Talk.

Participation in a virtual exchange program offers students an opportunity they might not get otherwise. Unfortunately, despite increasing interdependence, less than 1% of young people participate in international exchange programs. More surprisingly, almost 30% of Americans have never traveled outside of their country.

Intercultural exchange encourages students to respect other people as it fosters an understanding of another culture, different social norms, and, most importantly, such concepts as diversity and inclusivity.

The gateway to global success:

Approximately 400 million people around the world speak English as their first language. What’s more, English is the “second language” for the rest of the world. One in five people on the planet speaks or understands at least a little bit of English. Not only that, but English is listed as one of the official languages in more than a quarter of the countries in the world. This makes English one of the most useful languages you can learn.

The gateway to a world-class higher education:

Many students from around the world desire to earn an advanced degree from one of the 6,000 colleges and universities in the US or those from other English-speaking countries. In addition to the vast array of academic and career development opportunities, obtaining an education abroad also allows for personal growth. It gives students the chance to experience a new culture, expand their network, and gain a global perspective.

The gateway to a successful career:

In today’s society, most employers expect employees to be able to speak fluent English. This may not be fair, but it is the reality. Effective and confident communication in English is greatly appreciated in the international marketplace and may just give you the upper hand to get the job of your dreams.

The language of the media:

English content dominates the internet, and many of the world’s biggest media outlets, including television, movies, newspapers, magazines, and radio. Thus, knowing English grants you more access to the world without having to rely on translations, which are rarely spot on.

Unlike the students of yesteryear, future generations will have to face and address major global issues together. This requires intercultural competence, collaboration, and communication across cultures.

Real Talk is one of the best ways to prepare young people for such a world and to build the leaders of tomorrow, today.

Cross-cultural education expands one’s worldview, creates more positive attitudes, eliminates prejudices, and tears down the barriers that exist between people.

Exposure to diverse intercultural perspectives enables students to gain a more profound understanding of their own culture and its idiosyncrasies. It also allows them to participate more effectively and responsibly in a multicultural world.

Here are many more reasons why you should participate in Real Talk.

The most widely spoken native language in Europe:

Even though English is the most spoken language in the EU, German is number one on the continent when it comes to languages spoken by native speakers. The German language has also been given official status in a number of countries and even has a minority language status in countries spread far and wide around the world, for instance, in Brazil, Namibia, and Kazakhstan.

German is the gateway to a world-class higher education:

Germany has more than 380 universities with 17,000 study programs that rank among the best in the world. Year after year, Germany ranks as one of the most popular destinations for international students, with more than a quarter million foreign students being enrolled in German schools. What’s more, the German system for higher education boasts a number of universities with very low ($350 per semester) or nonexistent tuition fees. And even the $350 per semester that you’re charged is actually for your public transportation pass. So, in essence, you go to college for free.

Germany is a go-to destination:

Germany is the second most popular destination for expats in the world. In 2019, almost two million people moved to Germany, and around 400,000 of these people were students.

Germany is an economic powerhouse:

Germany is the largest economy in the EU, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of 3.73 trillion USD, which is the 4th largest worldwide. The country is always on the front line of new technologies and is home to numerous international corporations, such as BMW, Volkswagen, Adidas, Siemens, Bosch, Daimler, Allianz, and Lufthansa. Communicating effectively in German, along with a college degree, may help you get your foot in the door of one of these big businesses.
